The Lisbon Treaty was meant to represent the end of an era for the EU, a consolidation of a number of grand projects: EMU, institutional reform to absorb the largest enlargement in EU’s history and the democratization of the EU itself through an increase of the powers of the European Parliament and national parliaments. Instead of consolidating these achievements the post Lisbon period has been marked by a struggle between the institutions for their new place in the power balance of the EU, by a destabilization of EMU and mutual obstruction effects between national democratic processes and economic interdependence. This Honours class will discuss these challenges and how the EU might emerge from them.

Op maandag 19 december zal premier Mark Rutte te gast zijn bij NTR (voorheen Nova) College Tour in de Pieterskerk te Leiden. In het kader van Honours College zullen twee redactieleden van NOVA College Tour, Niels Bakker en Willem Sluyterman van Loo, op 1 december om 16.00 uur samen met studenten de bijeenkomst met Mark Rutte voorbereiden.

Deze bijeenkomst staat behalve voor Honours studenten ook open voor andere geinteresseerde studenten! 

Op 24 juni aanstaande organiseert de Jean Monnet Leerstoel een debat over de huidige eurocrisis, met als vragen: Wat is de rol van Nederland in de EU? Wat zijn de voordelen voor Nederland binnen de EU? De laatste tijd zijn er een aantal ontwikkelingen geweest die de discussie oproepen over de rol van Nederland in de Europese Unie.
